Duthil School

We wondered where the children from Auchtertipper, which we visited yesterday and nearby farms went to school. This would have almost certainly have been at Duthil and would have involved a walk of around 2 or 3 miles for most.

The earliest records show a school at Balnstraid Farm in 1654. There was a female school near Duthil Church.

From 1877 children would have attended Duthil School, now converted to self catering accommodation.
The school was built following the 1872 Education Act ( which made education compulsory for 5 to 13 year olds) on land gifted by The Dowager Countess of Seafield. Although it was built with a capacity of 120 pupils the school roll was only 52 in 1880. The school closed in 1990 when it was replaced by a new school in Carrbridge.
