Feral animal field day
Land owners in the Megalong Valley regularly need to deal with 3 government organisations, Blue Mountains Council and National Parks who tell us what we CAN’T do (followed by threats) and Local Land Services who tell us what we CAN do with encouragement and plenty of information. Today, Dan and Annaleise from LLS held a feral animal information day for about 20 locals on a neighbouring farm.
The main blip shows Dan demonstrating the new HogGone trap for wild pigs which has a magnetic lid that only pigs can open and which is filled with Sodium Nitrite bait, a compound specifically toxic for pigs and more humane than 1080.
The first extra is Annaleise showing us the new and improved deer trap while Dan’s back in the last extra showing the old style pig trap which we’ve all been using for years.
An enjoyable and informative day which also included morning tea, lunch and a couple of beers to conclude.
** For those who are interested, there is a camera out of shot to the left in the second extra which can be viewed in real time from an armchair at home - when there are a few pigs in the trap and it hasn't been mechanically triggered yet, it can be triggered via mobile phone without even getting out of the chair or interrupting the movie. Of course it does necessitate going out to the trap in the morning with the .22 Magnum.
