Ominous

Very sad news of the Queen’s death this afternoon. Whatever one’s views on the Monarchy, no one can deny that she carried out her role with dedication and grace and good humour and was deeply respected and admired by those who met her.

I only saw her in the flesh once when, as a 15 year old schoolboy, our Russian teacher took our O Level group to an exhibition of Russian artefacts at the V & A museum in London.

As it happened the museum was closed when we got there as the Queen and Prince Philip were visiting too so we waited outside for them to come out. Mr Skinner, our teacher, led three cheers for them and insisted we throw our school caps in the air!

It seems very strange to have a King.
