Heritage Week

This morning we took ourselves off to Farnham Maltings for the start of Heritage Week to attend two talks about Farnham.

The first was a potted history of John Henry Knight, one of the towns well known sons and famous for being the first person to be charged by the police for driving a motor vehicle on the highway. He was also a keen photographer and his plates provide an interesting pictorial history of rural life in the district in the 19th and early 20th centuries.     

The second talk concerned the history of the development of water supply and disposal in Farnham. Another quite fascinating talk. It's hard to imagine pumping water by hand from a well or living alongside open sewers running down the streets. We have much to appreciate today.

When we arrived at the Maltings  it was raining stair rods and I think the couple admiring the roses were very hardy not to make a run for it. I took a very quick blip and rushed into the building.

I am now sitting watching the news regarding The Queen. I think her reign is coming to its end. She has been a truly marvelous monarch and I am glad we were able to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee this year.  It will be strange to have a King but like everything we will get used to it.
