Hot

We're still in a heat wave, everyone sticky and panting, but the temperature is going down a bit. Drought and heat wave aren't a very good combination--the garden is crispy, and it certainly isn't a good time to be planting any fall vegetables.

Several of the vendors at the Farmers' Market opted out for today; I think they come from inland, where it is even hotter. My guess is that they can't pick in the heat, and the stuff won't keep very well anyway on the long drive. It's bad enough that our two squash plants have given up the ghost; I can't imagine being a farmer and watching your fields die off.

In the meantime, I stay inside a lot. Reading Properties of Thirst, by Marianne Wiggins, which is about, among other things, the fight for water rights in California.
