A Riot of Sunflowers
There are sunflowers....and SUNFLOWERS. These are superior sunflowers. I've watched these from their beginnings as the strong, bold seedlings pushed their way through a prepared bed at the allotment site. At first sight I thought they looked like sunflower plants but then thought they must be a vegetable that I was not familiar with as they had been planted in a crop fashion - not exactly in rows but in a block pattern in a bed that had been heavily manured. But my first surmise was correct as can be seen. All other sunflowers at the allotments are probably bird-sown from garden bird seed mix and a right motley collection they are...but these are just like those grown mostly on the Continent presumably for oil. Maybe we have a Ukrainian family living locally and they have planted these to remind them of home.
