Old Calton Cemetery: Hume and Lincoln

The rounded bulk of the David Hume Mausoleum, erected in 1788 to commemorate the philosopher who played a major role in the Scottish Enlightenment, is one of the most prominent monuments in the Old Calton Burial Ground - visible in yesterday's blip of Calton Hill from North Bridge. 

The angle of the morning sun doesn't fully illuminate the mausoleum's  northerly face and entrance, but gives nice definition to the solidity of its construction.  In contrast, it shines brightly on the statue of Lincoln atop the Monument to Scottish-American Soldiers, which commemorates Scots who fought for the Union in the American Civil War.

Erected in 1893, it was the first statue of an American President outside the USA, and remains the only monument to the Civil War outside America.
