The Stare Down

This year we have a multitude of Pacific Tree Frogs. Bella has a stare-down with one of these tiny creatures. 

The City of Portland manages the pond below our house. Pacific Tree Frogs, also known as Chorus frogs, are listed by Oregon as a Sensitive Species due to declining numbers. Every year the City surveys the number of tree frog egg masses. 

Their most serious predator is the invasive American Bullfrog. Bullfrogs eat anything smaller than themselves. Jeff worked diligently this spring to eradicate many bullfrogs in the pond. The reward is seeing a plethora of these tiny chorus frogs. We find them hiding in and around the potted plants on the deck, among the ferns and grasses around the pond. Besides being a delight to observe, they eat ants, flies, and other invertebrates.
