I’m on top of the world!
Do you remember the Carpenter’s song,
I’m on the top of the world lookin’ down on creation.
Well it felt like that today when I stood on top of the cairn on Drake Howe summit on Cringle Moor. 435m.high. ( hard trying to stay upright in the breeze!)
Behind me the panoramic view of Middlesbrough, and Roseberry Topping, ( you may see it in the distance by my right leg ) and as far as the North Sea.
We parked at Lord Stones ( see map) above Carlton in Cleveland.
Then walked up the Cleveland way to the 3rd highest hill in the North York Moors.
Only 3 miles but a climb which we really enjoyed.
The heather unfortunately was just past it’s best. The bracken was turning colour. On the top of the moor the peat had completely dried out with deep cracks.
Saw one plant of cotton grass.
All photos on the extra collage.
Near the start of the walk was a plaque.
‘ in memory of Richard the creator of The Samaritan Way, which allows the pleasure of walking to alleviate the pain for those in despair.’
I couldn’t find out who Richard was, but the walk is a 40 mile strenuous high level round route across the North York Moors National Park starting and finishing in Guisborough.
We also found out that the Tour of Britain Cycle Race is coming through this area on the 7th September, and will be cycling up Carlton Bank and past Lord Stones. Looking forward to watching it on TV.
Just to end this blip I would like to share the words written on a commemorative bench near where we parked.
“ Sharon.
We are all stardust, and on the 23rd February 2004 a lovely spirit took flight home, back to the stars once again in the night sky.”
