Poster

A poster in a cafe I was in today.  Probably from the early 1970's.  The North East and many areas of the UK were huge coal mining areas.  A way of life that has just about disappeared now.      

One of my great grandfathers and his family were miners in County Durham and then Northumberland  - a very dangerous and difficult job.  My dad was a miner for a very short time when he was a boy.  He hated it - he was a country boy and loved being out in the open.  He joined the navy when he was 16 as there were very little opportunities for him where he lived apart from mining and farming (and that did not go well either but that is another story).
