The birthplace of ‘The Archers’

Any ‘Archers’ fan will tell you that ‘Inkberrow’ is the home of The Archers, and this has been true from a few months (even just weeks) after the programme was first aired on national radio.  It was so rapidly popular that they needed somewhere for publicity photos, and Inkberrow was close to the studios and the producer, Godfrey Baseley’s home.   The full story is here.
 
The original scripts were written around a local farmer, Henry Burt, and his family and workers.  There are still one or two villagers alive that can tell you which farmhand was which character in the scripts.  Henry Burt actually lived in the neighbouring village ‘Dowsby’ (where our telephone exchange is) but he farmed most of the land around us, and as Dowsby didn’t have a pub he entertained in the Bull, even though he was tea-total himself.
