St Peter's Church Elford
Another lovely day, so I headed off to visit another church which had been recommended to me by Rapunzel. It certainly was worth a visit. There's been a church on this site since Norman times although nothing of the original survives. By the second half of the 14th century the old Norman church had fallen into disrepair, and major restorations and alterations took place under the guidance of Sir Thomas Arderne, Lord of Elford at that time. A century later Sir John Stanley (pictured bottom right) added the south aisle and chantry dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Today the church is full of beautiful wood carvings, stained glass, a superb painted organ (top right) and the most wonderful tomb effigies.
