Llys Euryn

It’s not difficult to find historical buildings here in Wales, but today I’ve avoided the more obvious castles and gone for something more obscure. 

Tucked away in a local nature reserve is an important medieval monument, a Manor House once belonging to one of the most powerful men in Wales. Ednyfed Fychan ap Cynwrig had responsibility for the Kingdom of Gwynedd serving Llywelyn the Great and his son Dafydd ap Llywelyn. Interestingly, he was also an ancestor of Owen Tudor and thereby of the Tudor dynasty itself. 

Yet despite all this, the ruin remained almost forgotten until the 1990’s when it was (partly) cleared of vegetation. There is an informative plaque, and a small sign indicating this is a scheduled ancient monument, but there are no signposts leading here, and climbing up the hillside through overgrown pathways, it suddenly appears almost like some enchanted vision.  

Of course, since the days of Ednyfed, others have come and added to or changed the structure, much of the remains now 15th rather than 13th century. But it remains an undeniably special place, full of atmosphere and history.
