Gardeners Cottage
To RHS Bridgewater this afternoon. My primary purpose in going was not to visit the garden, but as I was there it seemed daft not to have a quick walk around. As always, it all looked wonderful.
The volunteer guide was telling this group all about the history of the gardeners cottage, which was built for the head gardener. The original gardens served Worsley New Hall, which was demolished just after the end of WW2.
One of the attractions of this site to the RHS was its history. Although derelict and decaying, the old walls remained, as did the boiler house, outbuildings and a silted up lake. And the cottage, which was listed. It had massive potential, and only the RHS could have realised that in such green and community linked terms.
