Walk while you can
Twenty years ago I started to run. I ran 5Ks, 10Ks, 10 milers, half marathons and marathons. I also walked a few marathons too. Around this time I also started to develop CIDP. This is a progressive neurological condition which for me means that my legs are getting weaker and balance, together with standing still, is a bit of a challenge. I can still walk although running, sadly, isn’t really an option anymore. Some would think this not sad at all, who the fuck wants to run? I'd love to much more now i can't.
So I’m going to get another 10K event under my belt and this will be The Liverpool Shine Walk for Cancer Research on 9 September. I know people who have recovered from cancer and I know people who haven’t. My mum was one who didn’t.
I went on my first training walk today round the lanes I used to run along. It felt good. I've missed those lanes and it was really good to walk them with my music in my ears albeit playing quite low as the the lanes, generally, are busier than they used to be. Today they were quite quiet though which added to the enjoyment of the whole walk. I did 4.2 miles so am fairly confident that 6 miles - 10K round the streets of Liverpool will be fine.
