Fishing

I don’t quite know what to think about today. Will and I went on a sea fishing trip as a replacement for our cancelled camping last weekend. It was a lovely boat ride out to the open sea, there were 12 of us. Me and Will, a man and two (what turned out to be) bloody thirsty 10 year olds and a multi generational family who had names like Bunty and the like. We stopped, waved fishing rods near the water and then all hell broke loose with mackerel literally jumping into the hooks. Will caught 3 in the first 20 seconds and the boat seemed full of dying fish. Will and I were a little traumatised by this, no one else seemed to be and merrily kept on killing fish. We sat, quietly rocking, watching them.

Then we switched to bottom of the sea fishing. This was much better. In 40 minutes, there were 3 fish caught, all of which were thrown back. It felt like better balance.

We came home. I sat in the garden with gin. Then fried some mackerel fillets. They were really ever ever so tasty. If only they weren’t so very easy to catch…..
