Snow gums

I have been trying to find pictures among our travel photos of the remaining ten trees in the ABC ‘favourite tree’ vote.

These are snow gums, photographed near Falls Creek in the Victorian High Country in 2016. Snow gums often have gnarled, twisted trunks as a result of extreme Alpine weather conditions. They are susceptible to fire and to a particular borer, the longicorn beetle. Consequently vistas of snow gums are sometimes dominated by lifeless white trunks and branches.

They wouldn’t be my favourite tree, but I guess they are iconic for those who love the snow country and the ski fields.
