I have just finished a Simon Scarrow novel "Hearts of Stone" a historical drama set in WWII and about the Greek resistance. I had no idea about how Greece had suffered during WWII, the starvation that occurred and the dreadful murders of the locals in retaliation for the resistance actions. I do admire authors who can take the historical facts and weave them into a novel bringing those past actions to the notice of a wider audience than would be achieved with a factual history book. If , like me, you are unaware of this side of WWII then this would give you a fascinating insight into how the war impacted Greece, woven into a story about a modern day history teacher and her Greek Grandmother.
