Duff House Vinery
Duff House Vinery and walled kitchen garden were part of the Duff House Estate and are now much reduced in size. However a regeneration project is now underway. The huge vinery has been restored and the garden is being returned to production with the involvement of the community.
Map evidence and a surviving diary enable the development of the garden to be traced. The vinery was added to the already established walled garden in 1873 and grapes were planted that year. The abolition of glass tax in 1845 and window tax in 1851 made such expediture and the growing of grapes feasible. The vinery was heated by a system fed by boilers housed in the neighbouring bothy. The South facing wall of the garden (see extra) was also heated, the flues for this can be seen on the back of the wall. Fruit trees grown as cordons against the wall would have benefitted from the extra heat.
