Pool number 3 in the cutting was just mud yesterday. It's filling up rapidly. 

We believe there was once a drainage system that collected rainwater from the cutting banks and drained it away via large clay pipes. 

One of those pipes has risen to the surface and broken. That's why we have 3 pools along the length of the cutting.  When we bought this house, there was no water down there.

I've had a frustrating day. But I shall not bore you with the details.
