Green-veined White
My husband and I set off this morning after an early breakfast for our favourite local walk. It was still pretty warm as we started but we headed up the River Otter through a shaded wooded area and then across an open field. The corner edges of the field have been left for wild flowers to grow and we saw several Gatekeepers and a couple of these Green-veined White butterflies feeding on the flowers and chasing each other around. We continued our walk along a narrow old green path with trees on with side enjoying the dabbled light and cooler temperatures. Emerging from here it was a walk in the full sun along lanes and past fields many of which have been harvested and are bare except for the stubble. No birds were seen and no hares spotted but a few more butterflies seen including a Holly Blue. Once past the sewage treatment works we hit the coastal footpath and returned back home. Fortunately there was a bit of a breeze at the top of the hills by the sea edge. Not surprisingly the local beach looked pretty busy with people swimming, paddling, kayaking and paddle boarding. The sea also looked pretty calm. It would have been tempting to go for a swim but we were by then feeling pretty tired and in need of a coffee we didn't have our beach gear and our route didn't take us that way.
A quiet hot afternoon and some watering on the allotment in the evening. It's certainly a good year for courgettes and tomatoes.
