Check your brakes!

I spent ten years in Yorkshire en route to the Midlands, and my earliest recollection of the hills and dales was this scary road sign.

I was back there this weekend and after passing it (in the dark) I had to stop and blip it! Basically, should your brakes fail when you're driving down this steep hill, you're invited to veer off the road into a sand filled lane in order to avoid certain death by careering headlong into the bridge ahead!

It's clearly called an escape lane, but my friend tells me that in Wales they're called "Crash Lanes" which is certainly more apt, but even more scary!!
