Lucky loonie

The lucky loonie started at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. When Canadian icemaker, Trent Evans, prepared the ice for the ice hockey he buried a loonie under centre ice to mark the spot for the puck-drop. Both the men's and women's Canadian hockey teams won gold at the Games. The coin was retrieved and given to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Since 2004, the Royal Canadian Mint has released a commemorative 'lucky loonie' for each Olympic Games.
