Burrell

This was my first ever visit to the Burrell Collection and I highly recommend it. William Burrell was an art collector and philanthropist who gifted over 9,000 objects to the city of Glasgow in 1944 so that they could be enjoyed and appreciated by everybody. He wanted the collection to be housed outside the city in setting free from pollution, and it took many years for such a suitable place to be found. The Burrell Collection is now in Pollok Country Park, in a building which was completed in 1983, 25 years after William Burrell's death at the age of 96. You can read more about it here.

What I particularly liked was the way that the outdoor spaces were often visible through the huge glass windows. Here you can see a beautiful 15th century stained glass panel, originally from the Royal Window at Canterbury Cathedral, showing Princess Cicely of York; I love stained glass and the way that it is exhibited here. There is also an emphasis on the process of the making of the objects in the collection, which really helps  visitors to appreciate the skill of the artists and the many hours of work involved in their creation.

After lunch in the restaurant, I took the train back to Glasgow and a bus to Dumfries, where Sarah picked me up and brought me home. Work tomorrow, and then it will be "all systems go", preparing for the weekend - a houseful of guests and a wedding celebration! The weather forecast is looking good...
