Out Of The Blue

Out of the blue, the BBC has decided to stop broadcasting the classified football results at 5pm on a Saturday as part of their Sports Report radio programme, a sporting institution that goes back over 70 years to 1948.

I appreciate that most football fans are following the scores on their mobile phones these days and will have accessed the final scores before 5pm but I shall miss getting back into the car after a Yeovil home game and switching on just in time to hear those dulcet tones chanting the mantra (“Forfar 4 …., etc).

I remember as a boy watching my Dad in front of the wireless, checking his pools coupon as the results were read, marking the Xs, 1s & 2s carefully on his coupon; he always used to press down hard when he wrote, his tongue sticking out slightly as it always did when he was concentrating. He never won, but each week the man from Vernons dropped off the coupon, collected the stake and Dad’s hope of a better life was renewed until 5.05 the following Saturday.

Sad to see a tradition loved by football fans everywhere disappear. The Sports Report theme tune was a signal that Saturday evening had begun. It’s name? Out Of The Blue

In more mundane matters, Tess and I spent the morning getting hot and steamy in the bedroom, stripping - the wallpaper in anticipation of the walls being replastered later in the month.
