Archaeological Dig
Further up the lane from us an archaeological dig is in progress. They only have two weeks to try to establish a date for the origin of what is thought to have been an Iron Age fort or settlement. At the end of the first week they have identified the perimeter wall and ditch and found the remains from old post holes. Many of those engaged in the dig are local volunteers and the funding has been raised by a local group. It is known that here was also a Roman fort a one or two hundred meters away, what is now a neighbouring field, so perhaps there will be more digs in future years.
I started work on sanding down our large, double side gates in preparation for giving them several coats of preservative. Not my favourite way of spending my time, but needs must.
