Cave Stream
On a plane reasonably early back from Christchurch, in time to rendezvous with the family enroute to the hills. The mission for the day, Cave Stream.
Fabulous day to be heading into the hills and perfect with the stream with low river flows. Cave Stream is basically an underground river, with the cave passage meandering and twisting in pitch darkness for 560 metres between the two entrances. It was formed by the limestone dissolving over time, diverting Cave Stream from its original surface channel.
Took us around 45 minutes to get through, the trickiest two bits being the initial entrance where the water isn't quiet chest high (and very cold!) and the end where there is a 3m waterfall which you scale via a ladder and a slightly scary edge.
Have to say, Hannah wasn't overly enthused but Adam loved it,. As did I, for the third time, and always great fun.
Then into the sun, a big warm up, and home for an early'ish night ...
