THE DAY AFTER.....
..... both recent trips out. Still not sleeping brilliantly so having a quiet day today.
I have added collages of my trip to Kirkby Stephen in extrs for those that like to see them.
The parish church is an Anglican and Roman Catholic one. It has some interesting stonework on display within the church as well as interesring tomb statues.
THE CHURCH COLLAGES
The tomb statues are of Thomas, First Lord of Wharton and both his wives (no, not bigamy, one died and he then re-married) I like it that they have a statue of his dog at his feet too. Sir Thomas Wharton, 1st Baron Wharton (1495 – 23 August 1568) was an English nobleman and a follower of King Henry VIII. He is best known for his victory at Solway Moss on 24 November 1542 for which he was given a barony..
THE TOWN COLLAGE
The statue of the striding woman is of Lady Anne Cifford. She was a pioneering woman of great determination and energy and played a major part in shaping Appleby-in-Westmorland in the 17th century. Her programme of restoration, included a series of castles from Skipton to Brougham, near Penrith It was Appleby Castle, which became her favourite home. As well as restoring the castle she gave generously to the refurbishment of the town's churches and her memorial stands beside that of her mother in St Lawrence's Church, Appleby.
The statue was sculpted by Winton-based artist Diane Lawrenson and is called "Lady Anne's Way". It is situated right outside the Visitor's Centre in the middle of the town.
FLOWER FRIDAY
The hydrangea is from thee garden and I love the raindrops on it and thought it made a pleasant blip. It is my entry for Flower Friday, with very many thanks to BikerBear for continuing to host it.
Apologies for not commenting on your blips yesterday. I will try to catch up this evening. Trying to limit computer use due to the RSI.
