Ginormous

An enormous insect on this thistle. Does anyone know what it is? It had a bright yellow head.
I had a walk around the nature reserve but there were no little birds to be seen. I photographed insects instead. There's a butterfly in the extras.
I've spent the evening watching the Commonwealth Games. 

Edit - it's a hornet mimic hover fly.
