Fishing horses
We escaped the Bruges tourists and went up to the Belgian coast at De Haan where we took the very efficient coast tram. We sped along eastwards, picking up local people on shopping trips and commuting. We were the only tourists.
We stopped off at a resort beyond Nieupoort. We had a coffee then went to the beach, almost deserted on this hot day. Another day we might have seen the famous fishermen who go out to sea on their horses. Like so many ancient traditions, this method of fishing is now threatened by the EEC.
On the way back on the tram we stopped off twice more and the second stop was De Haan centre , a lovely Art Deco coastal resort. Here the beach was crowded and it was very hot. We sat in the sun, people watching and enjoying cornet ice creams. Real tourists.
We shared a good evening meal in a small restaurant close to the Markt Square in Bruges. It was called "The Beethoven" but they played 1950s French music, very gently. Great atmosphere!
