Rosetta Stone

This is the Rosetta Stone, an archeologic discovery so important that they named it after a popular language course! Seriously, what I learned about it was:
1. anyone can see it for free at the British Museum.
2.the decree, by Ptolemy V is in three texts: on Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic, and ancient Greek. This enabled hieroglyphics to be deciphered.
3.it passed from the French to the English during the Napoleonic Wars.
4. It was found in Rashid, or Rosetta, near Alexandria.
4. the Egyptians want it back.

I also saw the Elgin Marbles, a whole 'nother story. A lot of the free pamphlets in that exhibit dealt with how the marbles ended up in England, and how they never would have survived in Greece (the subtext was - they should stay right where they are). Who knows, maybe the Greeks have bigger worries right now than that.
