Edward Ridgway Memorial
Went out early today to make the most of the sunshine (in case it doesn't last). I decided to go and visit St John the Baptist Church in Middleton as it had been recommended to me. There has probably been a church on this site since Anglo Saxon times although nothing of the Saxon church remains. The church was rebuilt in the Norman style, probably towards the end of the 12 th century. It has many fine features inside including several beautifully ornate memorials, stained glass windows and the remains of 14th century wall paintings. This picture is of the memorial to Lord Edward Ridgway from the 17 th century. The gauntlet and helmet may well have been used in his funeral procession. If you are interested you can see more of my photos from the church here.
