The way things were
At Oxburgh they don’t mow the grass in the orchard - it is a lovely mixed meadow of wild flowers and tall grass. Once a year they have a ‘scything weekend’ when the orchard grass is cut using the old fashioned long handled scythes then left to dry in the sun. This must have happened over the past weekend as, when I was here on Friday, the grass was high and today it looks like this. Lovely and natural. The apples are ripening nicely too.
In Oxborough village the village green is long grass and I noticed it has been taped off to keep the public off it because of the fire risk with everywhere being tinder dry. We really need the rain!
