Grange-over-Sands

Grange is a somewhat upmarket resort on the northern bank of the Kent estuary. It is almost opposite Arnside which is on the southern side.

The Furness railway, after crossing the Arnside viaduct, runs between the town of Grange and the estuary.

I always think the the town councils of Grange had great foresight a century ago when they built a substantial mile long stone promenade between the railway and the estuary. It provides a fine walk with excellent views across Morecambe Bay.

It is enhanced by well kept flower and shrub bed all along between the path and the hidden railway.

We walked the length of the prom and back today admiring the interesting floral displays.

Here is just one example. The red plant is a Yarrow called Achillea millefolium “Red velvet “ and in the lower right is Eryngium giganteum “ Miss Willmott’s Ghost “. So called after an early member of the Royal Horticultural Society who, when visiting the gardens of her friends, would secretly drop seeds of this plant. When it came up the following year it became known as Miss Willmott’s Ghost.
