Afternoon walk
Saturday July 23
I spent a while in the morning watching the birds in Janet’s garden, including a couple of moorhens and their young!
Another dull day, but at least it stayed dry for our afternoon walk with Bernard around the Neumann and Anderton Flashes and a short stretch of the canal. The flashes have their origin in the history of salt mining in the area - Neumann Flash was formed when a salt mine collapsed in 1873. The Northwich salt mines had expanded rapidly without due safeguards, so inadequate supports were left to to hold the ground overhead. Now it is a great area for walking and birding, joining up with Marburg Country Park. Over the years we’ve been coming, however, the vegetation has really grown up, and from some of the bird hides you can’t really see too much, as the grasses and reeds have grown so tall. I always enjoy walking along the canals while we are over in the UK, seeing the colourful narrow boats, and as you can see from one of my photos, we did see one or two moving as well as the moored ones.
