Rewilding

Our village church has two graveyards, the Old Churchyard that surrounds the church, and the New Churchyard on the other side of the lane, which separates them. The old one is looked after by the church and the new one by the parish council. I noticed this sign on the new one this afternoon, which suggests they’re not going to be mowing any time soon, whereas I’m reliably informed that the church side is due to be mowed imminently. Personally, I’m all for ‘no mow May’ and the like (although I am quite looking forward to seeing whether any hitherto unseen headstones come to light once it’s been mown). A few people who’ve visited the churchyard while we’ve been surveying haven’t been too keen on its naturally unkempt appearance and prefer the Victorian mown look. So we’ll see how the two different approaches go down when seen on opposing sides of the road!
