The dropped stitch

Feynesses

I came across this excellent exhibition by accident yesterday, taking F for a piano lesson.

Set up in the Bigton Church, which is now owned by the community and able to host such events, it focuses on the work of two local musicians, Joyce Wark and J.J. Jamieson. Together they composed three songs which are interpreted in art and film.

Feyness is the Shetland word for a ghost and the songs playing in the background are hauntingly beautiful. The stories told are simply expressed - descriptions of individuals cast out from the Shetland society of the past. Alongside are wonderful pieces of art - portraits created with newsprint yet looking like delicate line drawings.

This is an exhibition that stays in your mind long after the visit. I'm so glad to have stumbled across it.
