Holyrood Abbey Church
'Holyrood' means 'Holy Cross', with rood being a Scots word for cross. Completed in December 1900, this Church was built as a new home for the 'Abbeyhill United Presbyterian Church'. It was designed by architect R. M. Cameron. Soon after the name of the Church was changed to 'Abbeyhill United Free Church' when a significant part of the 'Free Church' merged with the United Presbyterians to form the 'United Free Church of Scotland'. In 1910 the congregation was enlarged and a hall added to the building, following the merger with 'Holyrood United Free Church'. Yet more change came in 1929 when most of the United Free Church of Scotland joined forces with the 'Church of Scotland' and the name changed again to 'Holyrood Abbey Church' which it still bears today. Hope you kept up with all those different denominations!
