Villa Ventorum ( Villa of the Winds)
Today was all about visiting the interactive exhibition and reconstructed Villa at the Newt which only opened in June . It is absolutely wonderful but allow plenty of time - we were there nearly five hours and you have to book it .
The Villa is on the site of a 4th century Roman Villa which was complete excavated recently at the behest of the owner Koos Becker . Excavations had gone on over the years too !
We were able to see the original parts as well as the reconstruction. Everything in the exhibition is interactive and it was fascinating and fun - completely immersive. So much that was interesting - the sheep which had to be stroked to explain farming methods for instance !
By the time we were at the Villa, I was feeling wobbly so we had the Roman street food on offer - I had braised lamb with a flat bread .
The Villa is beautiful and once again interactive as you are led round by the ‘ housekeeper’ through the rooms . Everything is working including the bathing rooms complete with plunge pool . I liked the oil lamp ledges on the walls . The ceilings were exquisite and every detail included .
It’s impossible to relay the experience clearly . The virtual reality experience at the end was a highlight when we attended the family banquet held in honour of a gust accompanied by musicians .
We will revisit in the Autumn when it’s cooler !
