Old Stations of Edinburgh: Gorgie East

This blip shows the approximate site of the former Gorgie East station, long demolished. Originally just called Gorgie Station, it was one of the stations on the 'Edinburgh suburban and Southern junction railway' also known more simply as 'The Edinburgh Sub'. This ran in a loop through the southern Edinburgh suburbs, linking them with Waverly Station and Portobello. Gorgie Station, which became Gorgie East in 1952, opened in 1884 and closed when passenger services on the Edinburgh sub were shamefully withdrawn in 1962. Only the track remains now, which is used by freight trains to avoid Waverly and Haymarket, stock movement plus occasional diversions of passenger trains. Its usefulness in these regards saved the track from being lifted. The site of Gorgie East is not easilly accessible and I only got this shot because a street access gate was left open and I could walk up what was presumably the old station road to poke my lens through the chainlink fence lining the track.
