Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Echoes of troubled times

The remains of a LORAN station atop the cliffs at Port Erroll. LORAN, short for long range navigation, was a hyperbolic radio navigation system for ships and aircraft developed during World War II. These impressive brick walls were designed to protect the buildings containing the electronics and electrical generators from bomb blast.

The buildings in the distance date from earlier troubled times. They are the ruins of New Slains Castle overlooking the North Sea from the very edge of the dramatic cliffs.  Francis Hay, 9th Earl of Erroll, built the castle after James VI had destroyed his old castle following the rebellion of 1594. The Hays occupied the castle for over 300 years but sold it in 1916, after which it rapidly fell into disrepair. You can read all about the rebellion here.
