Blackthorn winter

The first flowers of blackthorn or sloe are starting to come out and soon the hedges will be full of snowy white blossom. But this is the 'blackthorn winter' when the weather usually turns colder as the flowers come out and the weather forecast for the next few days is for possible frost at night.
