Swirling skies
After yesterday's adventures at Gränsforsbruk, the axe foundry, we continued onward to visit a very old friend, who had just moved. That was lovely, but strangely no photographs were taken!
We continued our journey the next day and the travels for the day ended when Jan located this dream of a spot to stop for the night. A sandy beach, a huge lake (Dellen, formed by a meteorite strike around 90 million years ago), and a place to park where we could watch the sun go down. (That last point wasn't to be...) Soon after we arrived a thunderstorm passed along the far side of the lake. It was spectacular to watch with a fair bit of lightening and a very dark sky. Whilst all the drama was happening on the far side of the lake it was dead calm on our side, with no wind at all, as you can see in the two extras.
However, that situation changed shortly after I took the main blip.
This was the tail end of the storm, trailing across the lake towards us. These "cloudlets" formed under the main cloud and we could see them circling around and getting lower. We were sat at a picnic table having a glass of wine and a bowl of nibbles while we watched the show. It was still completely calm and I half-joked about waterspouts. Our neighbours had their awning out and they became uneasy and took it in, which proved to be a very wise move. When the wind arrived it went from zero to nearly blowing us over in about 30 seconds!
The bowl of nibbles flew off the table and the glasses of wine were only saved because we actually had hold of them. We ran to the van and dived in as waves formed and rain beat against the van. The big gusts continued for about 10 minutes and then settled into near gale force winds that blew for the rest of the evening. Nature sometimes puts on a very spectacular show!
