Winging it
A Common Eggfly Butterfly (Hypolimnas bolina) took up residence in our garden for a while this afternoon. It gets the name eggfly from the white egg-shaped patch in the upper wing - of the males only, as this one must be. When seen in good light, the white patches have an iridescent violet edge. Which has led, I read, to them being called Blue Moon Butterflies in New Zealand. Very sensible. The underneath colouring is very different - see extra.
