Cut outs

I'm always fascinated to find leaves in the garden that look as if someone's gone crazy with a hole punch.  In fact it means that leafcutter bees have been busy removing circular sections with which to build cells for their offspring. It's the females that do the cutting with their jaws and they then fly back to their nests 'surfing' on the leaf portion. (There's a great photo of that here.)

These are leaves of Enchanter's Nighshade, a garden 'weed',  but they  cut pieces from other plants as well, notably rose leaves, and sometimes use the petals too.

To show them to best advantage I inserted some of the leaves in clear  plastic envelopes and stuck them on to a window pane. The shapes remind me of well-bitten apple and pear cores.
