Saltoun Square. East side

On the left of the picture Alexander Fraser, 17th Lord Saltoun a veteran of the battle of Waterloo looks down from his niche on the former Town House. This flamboyant building dates from 1850 and for several years was a courthouse. It is now the Faithlee Centre.

Dominating the picture is the Parish Church, 'The Auld Kirk'. This building dates from 1803 and replaced an earlier kirk. The austere ' preaching box' design was typical of Church of Scotland churches of that period. The spire was intended to be a landmark for shipping. Local tradition says it was designed to be much higher but was cut short to reduce costs.
