Designed by Richard Rogers Associates with Arup Engineers, the T5 building cost a cool £5bn. I pass through it pretty much monthly and though we were there on that first weekend when the baggage handling system failed, it is remarkable how smoothly it operates, given the complexity and volume of what it handles; an average of about half a million passengers each week.
