Life through the lens...

End of the line.

Wish I could turn the clock back to the 1930’s when this was the track for the Miniature Railway which ran for about a mile round the lake in Golden Acre Park, Leeds.

Built by Frank Thompson, this privately owned Amusement Park was based on the famous Coney Island, New York, and opened in 1932.
As well as the railway there was a swimming pool, boating lake, Zoo, music tower and ballroom.
Unfortunately because of the Second World War it closed after only 6 years.
Taken over in 1945 by Leeds City Council when it was in a dilapidated state. The boating lake was filled in, and other buildings demolished.
Now one of Leeds finest gems.

As we were parking the car we bumped into two of our walking friends, and we all had a very enjoyable walk round the lake, and into the woods where we stopped off at the new hide ( see collage). Nothing to see there, but at the second hide, over looking Adel dam, we were fortunate to see the kingfisher. Hiding in a bush at the far side, it kept diving down to catch fish. Unfortunately too far away for any photos, but a good view with the binoculars.

We finished off with lunch sat outside on the cafe terrace overlooking the park and gardens.
The dull start to the morning turned into a beautiful summer’s day, with temperatures up to 25C.

More photos in the collage. The row of hanging baskets looked great. Every year they trial new varieties of plants.

So a really lovely day. Back home and sat in the garden with our usual Magnum.
Hopefully summer is now here to stay for a while.
