Symi Houses
A day away from the beach. We walked up into the top part of the old town to visit the Archaeological Museum. We had visited a few years ago but the last couple of times we were here it was closed for renovations. Now reopened, it is much expanded and improved, and was well worth the €4 entry fee. We then carried on up into the little lanes in the upper town, got lost as everyone does, but eventually found our way to the Kateraktis, the old donkey road down to the harbour. Seldom used now, it was built around the back of the hill so it couldn't be seen by any potential water-borne raiders. Very steep and very hot, but we were rewarded by a cold drink and lunch in the harbour. My picture is a view from the bottom end of the Kateraktis looking over part of the town.
We were longer in the harbour than we intended as we aimed for the 3pm bus back but forgot that is when the bus driver has his lunch so there is never a 3pm service. It's hourly and it was too hot to walk up the 500-odd steps, so we had another wander round and sat at a harbourside cafe with a soda.
