She's In Charge
On This Day In History
1957: Althea Gibson is the first African American woman to win Wimbledon
Quote Of The Day
"Shaking hands with the Queen of England was a long way from being forced to sit in the coloured section of the bus going into downtown Wilmington, North Carolina."
(Althea Gibson)
Like Jesse Owens before her, Althea Gibson was shocked to see how differently black people were treated in Europe compared to how they were treated in many parts of the United States. Also like Jesse Owens, the sports federation that arranged her trip to London treated her like a third class citizen and would not allow her to mix with the white U.S. tennis players. How could anybody not see that as a kind of mental illness?
Anyway, I was impressed watching the lady in this photograph. She was in charge of the windsurfers practising at the beach today, and she was zipping around on this motorised surf board with her hands held casually behind her back operating the controls which look something like the controls of a video game.
She's so cool!
